Vorontsov Palace in Odessa

Odessa is an old city, so there are many buildings and sights of the XVIII-XIX centuries. The list of buildings of these times includes the Vorontsov Palace. The complete construction of the palace complex with a belvedere by the sea and a semicircle of stables drowning in the luxury of a garden was completed by 1834. This unusual place served as a muse for writers who drew inspiration from unusual places.

The fate of the palace was not coordinated in the best way. The Vorontsov Palace during the Crimean War suffered significant losses. In 1853, it practically turned into ruins. With the beginning of the revolutionary movement in March 1917, the gymnasium was one of the first to fall into the sphere of interests of the new government - the center of the Odessa uprising of the “Soviets of Workers and Soldiers” was located here, and then the headquarters of the Red Guard, which did not contribute to the preservation of the unique interiors of the palace. Part of the interiors was moved to Alupka.

At the end of the Civil War (1917 - 1923), the halls of the palace were used for the needs of public organizations. Mostly chess competitions were held here, which served as a guideline for the fate of the palace for 20 years. In 1936, by decision of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR, the halls were arranged for the needs of the Pioneer House, the opening of which with the Big Christmas tree in the Ballroom marked the beginning of the New Year for Odessa children.

During the Great Patriotic War (1941 - 1945), the preserved Vorontsov Palace complex suffered significant losses: the Oryol Corps (technical department of the Pioneer Palace) and the Winter Garden were wiped out, and the rest of the buildings and structures were damaged by shells and buckshot.

The post-war restoration of the 50s of the XX century, along with the restoration of the architectural appearance of the surviving buildings of the complex, took away a unique cast-iron grating of the park fence, cast in Charles Beard's factory in St. Petersburg (1766 - 1843), into the steel-furnace vents

In our opinion - a great place for walking. Anyone can take a picture on a gorgeous belvedere against the sea.
