located in the village of Taro, which is 18 km from Ubud. On its territory of about 20 hectares live more than 30 elephants belonging to the endangered species

Let's say right away: these animals never lived on the island. Since the 1980s, the deforestation began on the Indonesian island of Sumatra - the only natural habitat of the Sumatran elephant on the planet. When the government realized the likelihood of an environmental disaster, various parts of the island were declared reserves, and the elephant population was taken under control. The situation was aggravated by the fact that elephants became victims of poachers. Deprived of habitual living conditions and frightened, these animals, hoping to find a new home, destroyed the villages that appeared on their way and destroyed the plantations. Alas, the dissatisfied and narrow-minded landowners began to set traps on the “pests”. By that time, the killing of elephants was already punished with a huge fine and even imprisonment, but this could not stop either poachers hunting ivory, or local residents trying to protect their lands ...

Through the efforts of the Australian Nigel Mason and his wife Yani, they managed to organize the movement of animals from Sumatra. This was perhaps the most difficult test for the elephants - 6 days of travel, 3,000 kilometers of road and two sea transplants. The Balinese land has become a safe haven for gray guests from Sumatra, but what is a real paradise. Indeed, even the place itself was not chosen by chance - the cool, humid climate of the Taro hills for elephants is extremely pleasant and comfortable. In addition, the park staff carefully planted on the territory of the plant, the most characteristic of Sumatran jungle.

A year later, the couple were able to take under their protection another 8 sufferers from the camps of Sumatra. And after adjusting the infrastructure of the park, another 10. And so, Mason periodically improved the park, making it even more convenient and attractive for visitors. But it would be more correct to say that for over 20 years it has been in a state of continuous development and has turned into a real resort for elephants
